Earnings are modelled, not measured: €30–€60 an hour (assumed hourly rate; higher for Leaving Cert higher-level Maths and exam season) × your hours × 30–80% of those hours paid in the first months. Check local prices before you set yours.
Download the last three years of papers for your subject and mark which questions come up every year — that list is your first lesson plan and your selling point.
- Pick one subject and level you can teach to H1 standard
- Write a 3-line offer with price, area and availability
- Post it to two local parent Facebook groups and your school/club network
To start: €0–€150 — past papers (free from examinations.ie), whiteboard or tablet for online.
Monthly: €0–€20 — video-call plan, printing.
- Parents will expect Garda vetting or references when teaching under-18s; follow child-safeguarding practice (another adult present, open doors, no private messaging with students).
- Strongly seasonal: busy January–June, quiet in summer.
- Cancellations — agree a 24-hour cancellation policy up front.
Grind income is taxable from the first euro; small amounts go on Form 12.
Declaring side income as a PAYE worker. Side income is taxable from the first euro. If your net non-PAYE income is under €5,000 (and gross under €30,000) you can declare it on Form 12 through myAccount.
